The Natural History Group was originally set up to promote a particular interest in bird watching. We now aim to take in all things ‘Natural’, spotting, identifying and photographing birds, plants, butterflies, moths, insects, fungi and even some mammals. We are a very friendly group always willing to share information and expertise.
We meet once a month during most of the year and occasionally twice a month during the summer months. Visits are held on different days of the week so members with regular commitments on certain days are not precluded from attending all our outings.
Most of our visits are to local Nature reserves with occasional longer trips further afield.
Ulverscroft Nature Reserve / Herbert’s Meadow Visit – 29th May 2026
In anticipation of weeing wild orchids the group visited Ulverscroft nature reserve and Herberts Meadow.
The reserve covers a whole range of habitats from hilltop (250 m) to valley bottom, and everything in between. Woodlands, heathland, grassland, meadow, wet woodland, ponds and marshes make this a truly diverse place to enjoy a stroll.
Flowering plants in Herbert's meadows include fragrant orchid, quaking grass, devil's-bit scabious, bitter-vetch, meadow vetchling, heath spotted-orchid and tormentil.
Parts of the meadow are very wet with sedge communities, great bird's-foot-trefoil and marsh thistle in profusion. We weren’t disappointed with the visit and as a bonus Angela spotted a solitary Bee Orchid!
Birdy Holiday April 2026 -
Eight of the group went on a birdy holiday to Yorkshire. We stayed in Bridlington and visited 3 nature reserves over the 3 days we were away.
We dropped into Potteric Carr nature reserve on the way up, then visited Bempton Cliffs the following day and pulling in Fairburn Ings nature reserve on the way back.
The weather on the first day was a bit disappointing after all the lovely sunny days we'd been having but the next 2 days were glorious. We all had an absolutely fabulous time. The bird spotting was brilliant, the company great and the restaurants, on our evenings out, excellent. We managed a photo fest between us so it has proved to be incredibly difficult to choose the best shots to share with you all.
